The past month has flown by (a little too fast for me). I was able to make a trip to Chicago mid-December to see my co-workers and friends that I have not seen since March 2020. I also got to squeeze in my annual trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo lights. My Christmas traditions include Christmas Eve with my mom’s side of the family, Christmas Day with my dad’s side of the family, and watching my dad’s basketball team in their holiday tournament.
My mom’s side of the family celebrates on Christmas Eve. It is always chaos because there are so many of us there (up to 50) but I love it and wouldn’t want it any other way. My favorite part of the night was playing Catch Phrase with all of my cousins. It is so fun because we are all competitive and in the end the girls team won!
I celebrated Christmas day with my parents, 2 sisters, brother-in-law, niece and 2 nephews. Before opening presents we lit the advent candles and each told what we are thankful for. As a kid it was hard to not open presents first, but as an adult I really like that we celebrate Jesus and thank him for our blessings. Last but not least was present time. While I am still a kid at heart and LOVE opening presents, I now find greater joy watching my niece and nephews.
In the afternoon my dad’s sister and her family came for dessert. We reminisced about our Gram and they told us stories about their childhood.
My dad has been coaching basketball since I was a kid. It doesn’t feel like Christmas if I don’t go see his team in the holiday tournament. Even though they lost it was great to see him coach.
The last week of December I was able to take a week off of work and continue to spend time with my family and friends.
It was a great way to close 2021 and I look forward to what 2022 has in store for me.
