We met 14 years ago when we were in college. We were living in the same small town and Zak had recently gotten back from a deployment with the Marines and was new to town. He was looking to meet people his age to hang out with and ended up messaging me through MySpace. We eventually found out that we lived on the same street about 4 blocks apart. It was then that we decided to finally meet in person. We also attended the same college, so we started hanging out and driving to campus together. We became friends and eventually started dating. We tied the knot in 2010.
We have struggled with infertility for 10 years. In 2015, after years of fertility treatments, we were blessed with our daughter, Katie. After she was born, we knew we wanted more children. We had difficulty getting good quality embryos during our fertility treatments, so in 2018 we went through the process of embryo adoption. The couple we adopted embryos from were absolutely amazing. Kristen became pregnant with our first adopted embryo, but unfortunately, we lost the baby at 12 weeks of pregnancy in early 2019. We had 3 embryos left from those that we adopted. We attempted one more embryo transfer. Two of the three did not make it through the thawing process. We transferred our last embryo, but unfortunately it did not result in a pregnancy. We went through a grieving process, but still felt in our hearts that we were meant to have more children.
We talked about our next step and decided that adoption would be the best route for us. It felt like a natural next step. The more educated we became on adoption, the more we knew it was right for us. The agency we are working with is Graceful Adoptions out of West Des Monies, IA. We have completed the required adoption training classes and home study required which helped us prepare to bring a new child into our lives. We feel more than ready to add to our family and are now just waiting to be connected with a birth mother.
We spend a lot of time together as a family. We enjoy playing board games and card games, playing outside, biking, kayaking, hiking, and traveling. There is a lot of laughter in our home. We enjoy having spur of the moment family “dance parties” in our living room. We have a playroom filled with toys and have more than enough space for another child to join our family.
Our daughter is an active 5 year old that has been ready to be a big sister for years now! She wants nothing more than a sibling to play with and to share her toys with. There is no doubt in our minds that she will make a great big sister and be accepting of any child that joins our family.
Our family also has a dog named Danny. He's a yellow lab and is the sweetest dog ever! We adopted him from a pet rescue 9 years ago. He loves being around people and is very gentle with our daughter and other kids that he's been around.
Our family values kindness, compassion, love, and knowledge. We believe that people should be treated with kindness because we never know what they are going through. It’s important to us to be non-judgmental about people’s situations. We believe that love is what makes a family. Both of us work in multicultural environments. We strive to keep an open mind and educate ourselves about other cultures. We hope to pass these values down to our children by showing them our values and being good role models.
One thing that we feel is important with adoption, is to openly talk with our child about them being adopted and about their birth parents. We are open to contact with the birth parents, if that is your wish. We believe that having more people to love our child can only be a good thing. We know that you have so much love for your child and will honor that love.
We moved into our current house a few years ago and plan to be here for many years to come. We could not imagine a more perfect house to raise our family in! Our house sits on about 2 acres a few miles north of a moderate size town in Northeast Iowa. We are in a development of houses in the country, which gives us the perfect balance of country and town living.
Our house is spacious, comfortable, and relaxed. We have 4 bedrooms as well as a large playroom.
Behind our house we have a beautiful view of the backwaters of a river. We are able to kayak right from our backyard! On summer nights we fall asleep to the sound of frogs and crickets singing to each other.
Our favorite part of living here is all of the wildlife we see in our yard! Turtles come up into our yard every year and lay their eggs. We were lucky enough to see the baby turtles emerging from some of the nests this year! Other animals that we frequently see include geese, eagles, rabbits, chipmunks, dragonflies, butterflies, a variety of birds, and occasionally deer. It’s the perfect place for our daughter and future children to grow up and explore!
I am the "sciency" one in the family. I love all things science, outdoors, and conservation. I am a PADI Certified Rescue Scuba Diver, and avid hammock fan.
I feel the best trait of a great partner is their ability to listen without judging.
I think the best trait of a parent is to be someone who fosters curiosity about the world around them.
I work as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. I'm passionate about caring for women and being an advocate for them. It's a very rewarding career!
I feel what makes a good partner is someone who is there with you every step of the way, through all of the ups and downs of life.
I have wanted to be a mother for as long as I can remember. I feel what makes me a good parent is that I spend quality time with our daughter and would do the same with our future child / children. I am encouraging, and a good listener. I love watching our daughter learn and explore the world.
