Who We Are
We first met 17 years ago when we were college students, working together at the front desk of the student dorms. We became instant friends and Paulo had a crush on Diana for quite a while! About 2 years later, Diana couldn’t deny that the feelings were mutual. That’s when we finally made our relationship official and we’ve been together ever since (15 years and counting)!
We’ve grown together into the couple we are today: we took college classes together, worked together, travelled to Guatemala, Mexico, and several places around the United States together, and supported each other’s educational and career pursuits (we both are teachers). In 2012 we got married and in 2014 our son Nico was born! He has made our lives so full of love and joy!
Nico is a happy, silly, and caring 5 year old who loves to play basketball, ride his bike, swim, go to art class, and play with his friends. He just finished kindergarten and loves being part of the Spanish language program at his school. Nico is ALWAYS asking for a baby brother or sister and we know he’ll be the best big brother!
We’ve always had a special place in our hearts for adoption (especially because three of Diana’s cousins are adopted). We’ve also faced unexpected fertility problems over the past two years. We now have no doubt that adoption is meant for us and is how we will complete our family.
Paulo, our friend Amanda, and I met and worked together at an after school program during college where we took care of the children of grad students; it was the perfect job for the three of us because we all love to be with kids (and we all ended up becoming teachers)! Anyways, we became very close friends with Amanda and her husband Michael, and have remained great friends to this day. Although they live in Texas now with their 4 children, we still Facetime and text often and try our hardest to see each other at least once a year. In fact, we were supposed to visit them during the week of New Years, but I unfortunately came down with the flu so we had to cancel our trip. We had then hoped to visit over spring break instead, but that’s right when the coronavirus hit.
So, we were so happy to hear that they were planning a California road trip this week (although Michael wasn’t able to go due to work). Amanda and her kids were able to come over today for lunch and hang out in our backyard with masks on. Nico had so much fun running through the sprinklers and playing basketball with the kids. We’re so grateful we got to spend time with them, even for just a couple of hours. We know they will love and care so much about our future child just like they do for Nico and we do for their kids; they are so excited for us to adopt!
We had fun (with masks on) this weekend with family and friends. On July 4th, Paulo’s family came over to hang out and have lunch together. Later on we went to a friend’s backyard so the kids could have a water balloon fight and of course Paulo got in on the action :) I documented the whole thing: check out the video I added to our Videos tab in the album titled, “Summer 2020.” You’ll hear me laughing in the background!
