Our Story

On a chilly day in February 2015, I (Kimberly) saw Hysun’s name pop up on an online dating site. I was balancing being a full-time college student, homeschool teacher, single mother, and caregiver for my ill mother. I felt ready to start dating so looking online made sense. I knew as soon as I saw him that I was going to end up marrying him, and I did 5 months later.

I (Hysun) came across a TedTalk describing the unique matching algorithms used for a specific dating site. I was intrigued, so I made an account to see how it worked. The dating site brought up Kimberly’s page - we had a 99% match! After talking back and forth, we quickly hit it off. It didn’t take long for us to fall in love. Two months later, I dressed up as Kim’s favorite doctor (the ninth) from Doctor Who and proposed. I made sure to include a quote from the show that this “would be the trip of a lifetime together.” We had a small wedding with our kids, Caitlyn and Samuel, beside us. It was perfect. Kimberly had Caitlyn and Sam from her previous marriage, but Hysun and the kids have always gotten along like they’ve known each other all their lives. We’ve been a family for eight years, and since then, we’ve both obtained degrees in computer science, co-parent our teenage children, and built a lifestyle that suits our needs! Hysun was right, marriage has been the trip of a lifetime! We go on weekly dinner dates and intentionally take time to go on walks, browse the local bookstore, or talk over coffee together. The life we have built is one of our greatest accomplishments, and we desire to keep building our family through adoption.

Our Home

photo of adoptive family's home Our home sits in the Texas Hill Country on over 6.5 acres. The moment we stepped foot on the property, it felt like “home,” like no other place has in our lives. It is a two-story home with four bedrooms. One of our favorite parts of our home is the yard, it has space for our animals to roam around, we can watch the neighbor’s cows and blackbuck antelope, and we get to see all the wildlife like roadrunners, deer, and armadillos. The backyard is an excellent area for the kids to play, and we have a fire pit we use for cookouts and because we are away from the city lights the stargazing is wonderful.
The nearby town is great for families, with many activities and places to go! They host chalk festivals, free concerts, movies in the parks, parent/child dances, there are theaters for plays and concerts, and parks along the river to play.

Hysun

adoptive family photo - Hysun I work in information security. I am very passionate about technology, cybersecurity, and building secure systems. I am a former Marine and am a lifelong learner with three degrees and nearly a dozen certifications. I am working on a second master’s degree and have a goal to achieve my Ph.D.
One of my favorite things to do at home is play games with our family. It makes me proud that both of our kids look forward to weekends when we all pull out various tabletop games to enjoy. Our family loves video games and reading books on various themes, from comics to business/finance to technology to fantasy and other fiction. When we don’t have the energy for games, we often put on shows like Marvel movies, Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr. Who, The Lord of the Rings, and others. We also love watching anime and have enjoyed many Studio Ghibli films together. I can’t wait to include our new child in our family outings such as going to the park, walking along the river, listening to music, and enjoying food festivals. Most of all, I hope to live my life as an example for them as I grow in my relationship with God.

Kimberly

adoptive family photo - Kimberly In my free time, I like to crack open a good book on investing, adoption, a classic like Pride and Prejudice, or anything science fiction (but my favorite is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). I am currently I'm working on a quilt for my grandmother. I love to hike although I don't get to do it as often as I would like. I love playing games with friends and family, whether that’s board games, roleplaying, or card games. This is something I've loved doing my whole life.
I homeschool my son(my daughter has already graduated). I have had the opportunity to volunteer with several organizations over the years, currently I am bottle raising kittens for local organizations. In the past I have volunteered with other organizations in the past such as a wildlife rescue and 4H. I hope to start with the Red Cross in the near future.
