Our pets

Not only do we have 5 children and 3 adults living in our home, but we 3 dogs, 1 indoor cat, 2 fish tanks, lots of barn cats, some chickens, and beehives.

Sunshine is our oldest dog, she is almost 4 years old.  Sunshine is 3/4 english bulldog and 1/4 beagle.  She is a chunky gal that love to lick and lay around.  She has never met a person or creature that she doesn’t love.

Storm is 2 years old.  She is a small mutt that we got from a rescue.  After DNA testing her we know she has some boston terrier, chihuahua, cocker spaniel, and pomeranian.  She is mostly a ball of energy who is highly attached to my father.  She loves doing farm chores and going on car rides.

Comet is our newest puppy.  He is less than a year old.  He was a birthday gift for our only boy.  Comet is 3/4 pomeranian and 1/4 husky.  He is still full of puppy energy and wants to play all the time.  He also loves to chew and shred all his toys, a habit we hope he’ll go out of.

Stars is our 3 year old indoor cat.  Although she is tiny, she stands up to all the dogs.  She goes on walks with us and demands to go to bed every night with her human (our second daughter).

Then we’ve got lots of barn cats.  Some came from the humane society, some just show up.  They live in the barn, the 3 season room (with cat door), and in the garage.  At least once a week they leave us a prize, mostly mice, but sometimes bird, moles, and other creatures.  Most of them are not fond of the dogs and steer clear of them.

We also have 2 fresh water fish tanks.  The larger tank is in our living room.  It has danios, fresh water shrimp, snails, and lots of live plants.  It’s relaxing to watch the shrimp and snails slowly make their way across the tank and they clean and eat.

The second fish tank has our daughter’s 2 goldfish, Sally and Luka.  They are happy to swim around in the bubbles and love to get fed.

Then we have the farm animals, the chickens.  We have just over 1 dozen laying hens in a chicken coop in the backyard.  My father and the kids trade off duties of colleting eggs, feeding, and cleaning out the coop.

Lastly, my father has multiple honey bee hives throughout our 30 acres.  He cares for them in the summer and harvests the homey in late summer and fall.  A few of our kids are brave enough to go out with him in their child-sized bee suits to help.

And if that’s not enough, I’ve heard that Santa is bringing a special hard shelled friend to our youngest.  We’ll have to wait a few more weeks to see who joins us.
