Our advent calendar - Books!
I always loved having an advent calendar as a child. Mine was filled with candy for each day. Today each of our kids has a small calendar for each day that they pick out (Legos, rocks and fossils, rubber duckies, and pokemon cards this year).
Our family calendar is a basket of Christmas, holiday, and winter books. I wrap up 24 books around Thanksgiving each year and number them. Each night we open one up and read it together. As the kids get older, we take turns reading.
This year I finally had enough books in my collection to wrap up 2 sets of 24 for my 2 nieces and my nephew. I had tons of board books that my kids have outgrown and I love the tradition so much, I wanted to share it.
Last night we read one of my favorite books, Red and Lulu. The book follows a pair of cardinals as the tree they call home is cut down to be used as the Rockefeller Christmas tree. There are themes of family, togetherness, and new beginnings - all which fit our family.
I’m looking forward to some other favorites, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Polar Express, and on Christmas Eve, The Night Before Christmas. We’re halfway there!
