Come From Away
Come From Away is one of my favorite musicals. It tells the story of Gandar, Newfoundland on and after September 11, 2001. That day in the town of 9,000 people, 38 planes with 7,000 people were grounded. The musical tells the story of how the town came together to support 7,000 strangers for 5 days. It is an incredible story of humanity supporting one another after tragedy. The story moves me because it shows that people can come together, put aside biases, and care for each other.
I was just a teenager on September 11, but I remember staying home for days and watching the news coverage over and over. My kids now learn about it in history class. We talked about it a lot before seeing the show. How the attacks affected people and how it changed the world.
This weekend I took 5 kids to see the show; my 10 year old twins and 2 of their friends, and my 7 year old daughter. The kids were inthralled with the show.
The tradegy of September 11 was horrible, but it brought together people and the world. I want to teach my kids that the kindness they show now can leave lasting effects on people’s lives.
If you want to watch the music, it is availabel on AppleTv (not a plug for Apple, just for the great musical). It is a very moving story with amazing music and true stories of how people were forever changed.
