Who We Are
We have been happily married almost 4 years and have known since before we got married that we wanted to have a child together. Josh has two sons from his first marriage-Jake(19) and Sy (17). They neither one live with us but we do usually spend time with them a couple times a week- whether it be at a springtime baseball game watching Sy or just out working with cattle since that is something they both have followed after Josh in being passionate about. Adoption has been something we have talked about since the very beginning. We really felt like our hearts always pulled us towards adoption but we did decide to try to conceive naturally. After a couple years of trying, we received test results that showed how slim our chances would be. We decided that it was time we follow our hearts and pursue growing our family through adoption. We can't wait to be able to raise a child together and welcome them into our lives!
We really enjoy being outdoors and living on a farm definitely gives us that opportunity. It's very neat to be able to go out and see the new calves being born and then watch them as they grow. We also really like to go to the river and go kayaking or just hang out with family or friends there. Rachel loves to be in the water whether it is the river, pool or occasionally the beach! We both share a love of travel so we try to go on at least two vacations a year doing things like exploring national parks or just relaxing somewhere beautiful. Living in Missouri, we are near a lot of rivers, lakes and just beautiful places to hike and explore, so we often take a quick weekend trip to see some of those.
On the other spectrum, we do really enjoy just relaxing inside and binge watching a TV series together. We seem to go through phases with everything from Fixer Upper or most recently we've gotten really into true crime shows. We always make it a priority to have dinner together each night and usually take turns throughout the week on who makes dinner. When it is nice out we often are out on the deck grilling. We can't wait to have a little one to share our lives with and teach them the things we love and learn what they will love to do as well!
Our week always starts with going to church on Sunday mornings followed by a family lunch at our local Mexican restaurant. Another weekly tradition for us is Friday night dinners at Rachel's grandparents home where all the family gathers for a home cooked meal and afterwards visit while the kids play games inside or occasionally an outside game of hide and seek!
This last week we hit our one month of being an active couple. We are still doing research to try and learn everything we can to be better adoptive parents. Rachel was reading someone’s adoption story this week that talked about how God was working behind the scenes when they didn’t even know it to prepare them for their baby that was already born. That really resonated with us because thinking back to if we had matched the day we went active we wouldn’t have been in the place we are today emotionally with open adoption. When we first started looking into adoption we didn’t think we wanted an open adoption. However, now we wouldn’t probably a little sad if we weren’t able to provide our child an open adoption. We have realized how important it is for our child’s identity and well being to know who their birth parents are and how much they care for them. We believe being a parent means always doing what is best for your child and open adoption is one of those things.
Also in our lives last week- we had a sleepover with our niece. She had so much fun playing with Charlie and Zori (our dogs) and making a pallet of blankets in the floor to sleep on. We also went to a couple of Sy’s baseball games throughout the week to watch him play. Friday night after we had dinner at Rachel’s grandparents we went to check cattle on the way home and had two new calves!
We are so happy to finally be an active family waiting for an opportunity to parent a child. We have completed our home study, video profile, print profile and are finally just waiting on “the call”. We actually just finished painting the nursery and putting in new wood laminate floors in the baby room. Rachel has really enjoyed decorating the nursery in a farm theme. She has printed duplicates of wall pictures in both boy and girl themed pictures.
