Like so many 21st century couples we met virtually. From that first date in 2013, there was an unquestionable chemistry, but what really sealed the deal was Mark’s dog, Hope, who decided she was in love with John and Mark had to keep him.
November 2015 we proposed to each other on the same day! How, you ask? John decided he was going to propose to Mark over Thanksgiving weekend. Mark decided it was the perfect time for him to propose to John. As John planned his flashmob proposal at our local park, our friends and family started secretly steering Mark to end his scavenger hunt proposal for John at the same park on the same day. It worked! As John finished the scavenger hunt, he got the big question, and then dropped the big question on Mark.
We've since renovated two apartments (ourselves!) and are settled into our beautiful Brooklyn neighborhood in a big two-bedroom with plenty of space for baby.
We renovated our beautiful two-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn (ourselves) about 5 years ago. Nestled just above the tree tops, we have the perfect bedroom waiting for baby, lots of room to play and spend time together, and a chef's kitchen where we can't wait to prepare big family meals and bakes!
We’re lucky to live on a tree-lined block in one of Brooklyn’s most beautiful neighborhoods. Surrounded by diverse communities and vibrant families; we’re only a short walk from fun restaurants, unique shopping, and local fun. Just a few blocks away there is a large city park with rolling hills for sledding and playgrounds for summer playdates.
Manhattan is only a quick trip on the subway, and we make sure to take advantage of the culture, the food, and the excitement of the city whenever we can. On gorgeous spring and fall days, we can even take the water taxi! When we need a break from the hustle and bustle, we hop in our car with our dog and head out of the city.
John grew up in a small town in Georgia where he developed a love for musicals and all things theatre, which led him to New York City! While he never did have his Broadway break, John became a special education and theatre teacher at a local theatre high school, where he helps the next generation of theatre kids pursue their dreams.
When not supporting his students, you can find John with his nose in a book, training for his second NYC Marathon, caring for his indoor garden, or on a hike upstate. Also, John loves to bake… really LOVES to bake! Every Sunday he spends the day in the kitchen whipping up sweet treats, which he and Mark deliver to their friends and family in the neighborhood.
Mark grew up on Long Island and after grad school, settled down in Brooklyn. Mark’s love of working with children has blossomed into a fulfilling and fun career as a Speech and Language Pathologist (speech therapist) working with students who have special needs. His silly, goofy nature motivates his students... and entertains most adults!
During his down time, Mark likes to pretend there’s an HGTV camera following him as he tackles home improvement and DIY projects (he even offers a DIY elective at his school). Mark loves being outdoors, riding his bike, at the park, in the water, and in the mountains. He is finding the right balance of exercise to match the intake of John’s cakes!
