School’s in session
Hello, is anybody out there? I don’t know sometimes if anyone else is.
Well, if you have found us, we are Chris, Suzy and our amazing kid, Gigi. Chris is an attorney, I write news for a media company. Gigi is a student, yogi, soccer player and martial arts enthusiast. She also loves unicorns, Elena of Avalor, vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles and her bike, which she named.
We are officially back to school amid the pandemic, here in NY. We live outside NYC in a really incredible small town and the elementary school just won a prestigious award for academic excellence.
School is literally in our backyard. We walk up a tree-lined path and you half expect little fairies to pop out from behind the pines.
Even before the pandemic, it offered an outdoor classroom. There is a garden, maintained by the kids, and a compost. There is a butterfly garden.
My mom, super grandma extraordinaire, helps with school drop offs and we do the pickups.
Gigi races out of school and over the hill as we walk home. Along the little dirt path, jumping on sticks and leaves. Stomping in the dusty dirt, making sure her new white sneakers have a little character.
It’s a magical part of the day. That we can pause work, walk across the street and “spring” our favorite person. And then watch her run and roam.
Then we do whatever she likes next. Scoot? Bike? Snack? Playground? Sometimes she even opts to do homework.
She craves learning. She writes little sentences phonetically. They make total sense to us. On the back of every paper, school or craft, she makes a heart with all our initials - even our two awesome cats.
That is what we are up to. Happily. Sending you good vibes wherever you may be.
