Who We Are
Within a week of 'winking' at each other online, we met up in the city for our first date. Over dinner, we shared our personal interests, details about our professions (Bart was in the accounting field and Sapna was a high school math teacher), and hopes for the future.
From that first night, we began meeting up every weekend for mini-adventures in the city. We spent hours together learning about each other's past as well as dreams for the future. We talked about how important time spent with family and loved ones meant to both of us. We discovered our mutual love of travel and exploring new cultures. It was a magical year, reveling in each other's company and falling in love.
One year from the day we met, we got engaged at the same restaurant as our first date. We knew we wanted to spend our futures together, supporting each other's dreams, raising a family and continuing our adventure for a lifetime.
Before laying down roots we decided to embark on an incredible adventure teaching abroad in Sub-Saharan Africa. We spent a year living in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia, a warm, friendly community with a large student population. We both taught in our respective fields at the local college and university in town. Together we conducted a series of HIV/AIDS workshops at several local schools. The year we spent in Ethiopia was the most rewarding experience and we feel so fortunate to have experienced it together.
After returning from Ethiopia, we decided to officially make New York City our home. We got married just down the street in Central Park with close friends and family in attendance. The diversity and vibrancy of the city is where we envisioned starting a family. As we began planning for our future, we both transitioned our careers to ensure more time and energy could be devoted to our family.
