Our story began as students at the University of Virginia. During our second year, we had a marathon first date that started with lunch, and then later became dinner and a movie (actually it was 3, we love movies!). After we graduated, Darin joined Teach for America and went off to St. Louis to make an impact. Nikki moved back home and started her job as a neonatal intensive care (NICU) nurse. The distance only seemed to make our relationship and love stronger and on one fateful visit to St. Louis, Darin asked Nikki to marry him. Now, we’re going into our 15th year of marriage that has been full of love, growth, and amazing times.
We welcomed our son, Marshall, almost five years ago, and have loved that our lives have changed in the most amazing ways. He truly is the best of us. He's incredibly warm and generous and has a great sense of humor. He loves building things, playing sports, going outside, and Tae Kwon Do. We love watching him grow into his personality over the last few years and he's so excited about being a big brother!
We've lived in for Richmond for the last couple of years now. Our neighborhood has lots of kids and young families. We often get together with our neighbors so the kids can play together.
We chose the home because it felt warm and inviting and perfect for our family. It has 4 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms on the 2nd level, a large open family room and kitchen, as well as a large basement. We're saving a room just for our special blessing (crib and changing table ready to go!)
Darin was born into a military family and he has lived in different parts of the US. His family finally settled down in Northern VA where Darin met some of his best friends. Although he went to college thinking he'd be a lawyer, he took an interest in education and hasn't looked back.
Education has become his passion. In every education role he's had (from teacher to Chief Operating Officer), his goal is to make sure that every child is able to get a great education.
What I Love About Darin (by Nikki)
"Darin is funny, smart, caring, and very supportive. He always makes sure to put his family first. He works hard to be successful for our family. He's an awesome father in that he's very patient and treats every experience as a learning opportunity. And on top of all that, he's a great cook!'
Family has always been a central part of Nikki's life and caring for children comes naturally to her. She grew up the oldest of 5 first cousins (all girls) and has a sister who is 16 years younger and all who she frequently to take care.
Nikki fulfilled her dream and became a NICU nurse where she cared for tiny little babies so that they would grow and thrive and be able to go home with their parents.
