Mike & Jami

To Someone Special, We are Mike & Jami hoping to become a family of 3

Hello,
We are Mike & Jami Raymond and are so very excited for you to read about us. Our journey together is an adventure, and we've built memories and experiences to last a lifetime. We hope to offer a child that same feeling, together as one family.

Our relationship is built on lots of common interests. Ever since we've been together, we've been going to concerts and movies. We enjoy watching football and hockey together. We support each other in our sports of choice. Jami runs and does performance training, while Mike is a competitive tennis player. We love taking our dogs for hikes and look forward to adding another hiker to the mix!

Our Family
We have an amazing family near and far. Parents, siblings, nieces, cousins, grandparents, aunts & uncles. Family is the greatest support network and we are lucky to have such a close relationship with ours.

Jami’s Parents, Sisters & Brother in Laws
My sisters, my mom and I share a special bond. We are there for each other for every life event - good or bad. My dad and I were born on the same day and share a lot of the same personality traits. My sisters are both married to great guys it’s nice to have some men in the family. They are so excited for our adoption journey and can't wait to be aunts and grandparents again.

Mike's Family
My parents have been by my side through every step of life's journey. I have a good combination of both when it comes to personality. Since our family is so small, they are incredibly excited for this new addition and to be grandparents for the first time.

Our Adoption Journey
Sometimes things happen that change your life and we all know it's not always good. The best you can hope for is that something good comes out of the situation. For us that is where our adoption journey began. Jami was diagnosed with cancer nine years ago, but we are happy to say that she is in full remission and great health. However, the treatments also left us unable to get pregnant.

We believe that our adoption journey will be the best possible way to start our family. Although our journey was hard and scary we realized more than ever that we have wonderful family and friends who will support us through all of our life's challenges and triumphs. When we shared with our family and friends our decision to adopt they could not have been happier!

Parenting Values
We believe in a nurturing home where experiences are more important than material things. Education, both academic and physical are very important. We want our child to be involved with activities, sports, volunteering. We believe household chores are good for development and responsibility.

Who We Are

Our story begins in July 2008, when we were introduced at the wedding of mutual friends in Connecticut. We soon began dating long-distance, as Mike was working in Connecticut and Jami in the Chicago area. Jami moved to Connecticut to live with Mike and their relationship continued to grow. December 2010 brought our engagement and summer 2011 brought another (more permanent!) move, this time back to Illinois. Soon after our wedding, we purchased our first home in April 2012.

We enjoy traveling and last year made it to Ireland - it was an amazing experience. We loved the culture, scenery and history and can't wait to make the trip again as a family.

We have two dogs, Baxter (Saint Bernard/Lab mix) & Milo (Hound/Lab mix). Both are shelter rescues. They are very sweet and well-trained boys who are looking forward to a human brother or sister.

We enjoy experiences shared together like going to concerts, hockey games, checking out new restaurants with friends and family.

Adoption Diary

My Job

Not everyone enjoys what they do for a living. We spend 40 + hours a week at our jobs and many people don’t enjoy it. I feel very fortunate that I really enjoy what I do. I work in the dairy industry on the farming side. Part of my job includes the opportunity to travel, supporting customers. This is one of my favorite parts of my job. I love animals always have always, so being able to spend some time with the cows is my happy place.I also work with the most amazing people who are so passionate about what they do. We are also fortunate enough to have flexible schedules which is great.

Sports

Jami thought it would be a good idea if I spent a couple minutes talking about the effect sports has had on me and how I hope to pass sports lessons on to our child.

While I can’t say my entire extended family is riddled with elite athletes, both my father and his father played high school sports.  My dad has continued playing basketball at a solid level all through his adult life.  More importantly however, he and my mom raised me by exposing me to all different sports at a young age.  They also never pushed me to specialize in any one sport.  I was playing soccer, basketball and baseball long before I ever found tennis.

The moral of that story is playing all those sports at a young age was the best thing that ever could have happened for my physical development.  Each sport teaches you how to move your body in a different way.  One may develop footwork, while the next develops hand-eye coordination.  They all develop balance.  Playing different sports while young is the physical equivalent of studying different subjects in school.  You do it to broaden horizons and become a more whole person.

From a mental standpoint, sports can be even more crucial.  Learning emotional control and how to overcome failure at an early age can assist in developing a more self-confident, resilient child.  Winning is important, but facing adversity, respecting opponents and the competition itself is more important.

Finally, sports can teach teamwork and learning how to work with others to achieve a common goal.  This is massively important to functioning in a workplace setting, or simply in developing relationships with friends and family.

I hope to be fortunate enough to pass these lessons on to our child.  Raising a well-rounded son or daughter is a dream and hopefully someday it will be a reality.
