Our story starts in 2007. That is when we had our first date to a local church's night of music. We dated for almost two years until Jake proposed on Christmas Day in 2008 at his parents home. We were married in July of 2009 and settled down in a little house in Ashland, Va. Kristen was teaching and Jake was delivering paper products for a local supplier. Jake decided to go back to school to finish his degree which provided a better paying job. With the better pay we began trying to get pregnant, with no success. We went to different doctors to see what could be done. Nothing was ever found wrong, we just could not conceive. This began a very trying time in our marriage. We shed many tears for the children that we could not have. As we learned through counseling, it is a wound that we will always have. But we decided during this time that our purpose for our married was not simply to reproduce but to be content with what we were given. And we began to see some light when we started looking at adoption. The adoption process itself has been long and painful sometimes as well. But we have faith. And we are excited to meet whomever we are meant to be with as our child. We our both special education teachers at the same high school and we bought our very first home 5 years ago. We look forward to filling our home with the laughter and love of a child.
We love our home! It is a brick Cape Cod in Mechanicsville, Va. It is has plenty of room down stairs and we plan to finish off the entire upstairs in the future. Our home sits on 1 acre where we keep chickens and have a walking trail. We hope to have other animals in the future as well. We have wonderful neighbors nearby and the school division is the best in the county.
My name is Kristen Axselle Gilkey. I have lived in Virginia my entire life, mostly in the Richmond area.I grew up outside of Ashland with my two sisters and brother. For college, I was accepted and went to William & Mary where I majored in Geology and minored in Religion. I became a school teacher right after college and have been doing it ever since. Recently I switched from teaching Earth Science and Environmental Science to Special Education. Which I love! I love going outdoors for hikes or to go camping. I love birds the most! We have always had at least one bird in our house and we keep chickens as well. I cannot wait to meet and be the Mom of our child!
