Our Story

Hello! We are Dan and Shannon, a happily married couple in northern Virginia. Thank you for taking the time to read our profile. We are so excited to be on this journey.

Our story starts like a lot of other couples in the 21st century - online. However, we didn’t connect through a dating app; we actually found each other on social media. We began communicating and about a month later, we met for our first date. We quickly became inseparable. After a year, Dan proposed on Valentine’s Day! We were married in 2009 at a historic inn in Pennsylvania near Shannon’s home town. We have been married now for over 10 years, and it has been such a fun and exciting ride!

We knew that we wanted a family to share our home and our lives. After years of trying to conceive, three miscarriages, and a lot of heartache, we decided to pursue adoption. We are a fun and adventurous couple who have a lot of love to give, and we very much look forward to bringing a child along on our adventures!

Our Home

photo of adoptive family's home We live in Northern Virginia, in a suburb of Washington, DC. Our house is a four-bedroom, single-family home with a large backyard that has plenty of room for dogs, kids, toys, and the swing set we plan to build! We have three dogs and three cats. They are all amazing animals with unique personalities. The best part is that they all get along really well.

Our home is a cozy and comfortable place, and our neighbors couldn’t be better. Our neighborhood is diverse and full of families with children of all ages. If we ever feel like we need to get out, we have a park within walking distance and many more a short drive away. We have a neighborhood walking trail as well. Each year, our neighborhood puts on a Halloween parade where the kids walk the main road in their costumes before they head out for trick or treating. We have been looking forward to doing that with our kids ever since we moved in 12 years ago.

One of the things we love about living in the Washington, DC area is that it’s full of history, culture, and a ton of other fun activities for families to enjoy together. Not to mention, we’re just a short drive from beautiful mountains, museums, sports, orchards, wineries, parks, theaters, and much more. We can’t wait to spend our weekends exploring all of these places with a little one.

adoptive family photo - Shannon I was born in Delaware and moved around a lot as a young child before my family landed in Pennsylvania when I was in elementary school. I enjoyed school quite a bit and participated in a lot of school activities that involved music, like choir and marching band. I attended college in Pennsylvania and earned two degrees (secondary education and history).

After graduation, I moved to Florida for two years to attend graduate school. It was an amazing experience, and I met people who are some of my closest friends to this day. In 2004, I got a job in the federal government and moved to the Washington, DC area. I have lived in Northern Virginia and worked for the same agency ever since!

Outside of work, I love to travel, spend time with family and friends, read, play board and card games, cook, bake, and attend yoga classes. I am a huge animal lover, and together Dan and I have three rescue dogs and three rescue cats.

“The love that Shannon has to share is probably the most important trait that will make her a good parent, and the love that we share makes us both even stronger. She is nurturing, patient, and kind, and I believe that she was always meant to be a mother.” - Dan

adoptive family photo - Dan I grew up just outside of Detroit, MI. I actually went to the same high school that Madonna went to! Although, she is quite a bit older. After graduating from high school, I moved to California with my parents because my father had to relocate for work. I lived there for eight years or so and attended college, earning a degree in Finance. After graduation, I got a job as an accountant for a construction company. In 2002, they asked me to go to Virginia for a few months to help set up a new office, and I never left! I’m glad I didn’t go back to California or I might never have met Shannon.

I am a huge people person and make friends with everyone. My idea of a good time is spending time with friends and family as well as our many fur babies. I enjoy doing projects around the house, BBQing, comic books, going to the movies, video games, camping, yoga, and football.

“Dan is a fun, kind, and big-hearted partner. One of his best traits is the ability to make me laugh even during the roughest of times. These traits would make Dan an ideal father. I also believe that his ability to have and keep an open mind will make Dan a loving, understanding, and caring parent.” - Shannon
