From the onset of our relationship, we knew that we wanted to have children to complete our family. Both of us grew up in families that provided deep love and a sense of belonging and we want to expand our family to pass on that love and feeling. For us, adoption provides us with our best opportunity of realizing this dream.
We have not had personal experience with adoption with our immediate families, but we have learned about adoption extensively through the process of preparing to become adoptive parents. We knew that we wanted an open adoption from the start, but learned just how important openness is to our child and our family through the courses and the reading we completed. With that being said, we are committed to and hopeful that we will be able to create a plan for on-going contact that will allow our child to thrive off of all the love that they will experience through openness.
We will start telling our child his/her adoption story from the beginning and will continue to expand on the depth of his/her knowledge of his/her story until it is time for our child to take ownership of his/her story. We know that all children are unique with different personalities and needs and we will be mindful of this as we explore his/her adoption story with him/her.

We were on a trip to DC taking a break from lots of walking and exploring and several people walking by asked if we wanted a picture. We eventually obliged!

Who We Are
We met during a special time of year while we were celebrating Christmas. Kasey was on a holiday break visiting his family and David was in Richmond away from his family back in Nebraska. David was not alone for long as he quickly and easily fit into family time with the Kolste family. We fell for each other quickly and Kasey eventually moved to Richmond a half year later. We knew from the start that a big part of building our life together was going to involve creating a family together.
Our lives are full of family, friends, and adventures. We frequently travel back to Nebraska and Montana and actually traveled to both when we were married in Glacier National Park in Montana. We are blessed with not only an amazing family, but we had developed a rewarding community of friends here in Virginia. We feel fortunate that we also have had opportunities to travel to many corners of our country and also abroad.
Living meaningful lives in our Richmond community provide a lot of joy to us. We are the parents of two furry children, Oliver and Oscar, who are quite adventurous themselves frequently accompanying us on family hikes and adventures. We both work in careers that are rewarding and allow us to feel like we are contributing to our community. Kasey is a 4th grade teacher and has been in the profession for over fifteen years. David is the Vice President of Philanthropy for Boys and Girls Clubs of Richmond and has worked in the non-profit field for almost ten years. We love spending time with our friends and family. We consider ourselves adventurous and definitely appreciate the great outdoors! Hiking and camping are common weekend activities that we enjoy with our friends.
We count our blessings every day and are thankful for our rewarding life together. David has a sister and brother who are both married with growing families. Kasey has two brothers and two sisters who are also married with established families. Collectively, we are the proud uncles of eight nephews and two nieces ranging in age from less than a year old to 26 years old. Family is the pinnacle of our life together and we hope to expand our family and the blessings and joy that we are already experiencing.
