We are Ken and Melissa, and we met in 2006 in New York City.
Ken is originally from Seattle, Washington. He has three younger sisters and a large extended family. We visit with each other several times a year. Everyone refers to Ken’s mom as Gram. Gram is loving and kind and especially funny! She makes all of us laugh. Ken spent his 20’s in California where he was a musician. He played the guitar in several bands, recorded an album in London and toured throughout Europe with his band. Later, he moved to New York where he currently works in real estate and plays music on the weekends!
Melissa is originally from central Pennsylvania and has a younger brother who lives in Pennsylvania with his family. Melissa grew up loving kittens and puppies, playing dress up, and swinging on grape vines. Melissa's mother taught her how to sew and she sewed her own outfits in high school. In college Melissa spent a year studying in France. She lived with a French family and ate too many pastries! Melissa's time in France was a life changing experience for her. After college Melissa worked as a chemical engineer before she switched careers. She now works as a pastry chef in New York City. She is working on her first cookbook – a baking book – and she is currently testing all of the recipes at home. Melissa loves anything French and is a romantic at heart.
In 2008 we were married and in 2010 our son was born. He is currently in second grade and wants very much to be a big brother. He loves playing with and taking care of younger children. He is loving, kind, generous, artistic and energetic, and he likes to play tennis, swim, do yoga, and go to art and robot camps. He also loves our two pug dogs, as we all do. They are an important part of our family, and we enjoy doting on them.
We love being parents. Teaching our son and helping him to grow and navigate his world bring us immense joy. Simple things like showing him how to tie his shoelaces and watching him finally do it on his own, reading stories to him at bedtime, making scrambled eggs together in the morning for breakfast, and watching him play with his friends are so satisfying. So are planning special trips and activities to do together like going to a medieval reenactment to see knights ride on horseback or building circuits together for a science experiment. We love all that parenting brings.
We live in Brooklyn, New York, and we enjoy everything that living in a city offers. We live close to several large parks and playgrounds, and the schools in our neighborhood are excellent. We love all of the special things that are available for babies, toddlers and children in our neighborhood – lots of playdates with other children, exploratory museums just for children, swim classes, a farmer’s market with fresh produce, sing-a-longs, and the coolest jungle gyms with large building blocks.
We believe in having balance between our lives in the city and nature and so we like to spend the weekends at our cabin in the countryside. There we relax, barbecue, build a fire in the fireplace when it’s cold outside, cook together, play board games, hike and ride bikes outside.
