We met through mutual friends while Christian was starting a non-profit climbing gym in Sandpoint. We started running in the mornings together, then started meeting up for coffee breaks, lunches and up on the ski hill.
We began dating soon after and quickly fell in love and started to build a life together. We are each others biggest cheerleaders and support system. We have a lot of the same interests and usually take a climbing trip or two somewhere in the west every year.
Christian proposed to Melissa at a remote cabin in the Canadian Rockies that overlooks a glacier (we can’t wait to bring our child there someday). We were married the next year on a mountain lake surrounded by friends and family.
ABOUT STARTING A FAMILY
We have been on a challenging journey of loss and infertility. Thankfully we have grown closer because of it and have thought long & hard on what is the best way for us to start a family. The answer became clear to us that we are meant to adopt and someday we can’t wait to meet the new addition that God intends to enrich our lives with.
In the fall of 2015 we moved from North Idaho down to Boise for a great job opportunity and so we could be closer to our parents. Last summer we bought our home, our favorite part is that it tucks right up against the foothills and has a great trail system that we can hike and bike just five houses away. We’ve even seen deer and turkeys roaming around in our backyard.
I was born in Sandpoint, Idaho; the youngest of three siblings. I have an older brother and sister. We grew up on 15 rural acres. My parents instilled in me a love for the outdoors. I learned to hunt and fish from my dad and ski and garden from my Mom. We have a large extended family and I was lucky enough to be a part of annual family reunions and spend time hunting & fishing with my cousins & uncles growing up.
In high school, I had a real passion for track and field. I broke a few school records and received a college scholarship where I competed in track and studied literature and science. I have always had an appreciation for the arts. I was an editor for a literary journal and published a few poems of my own.
When I graduated from college I had a desire to work in the outdoors, so I became a mountain guide and counselor in the at-risk youth industry. I loved helping young kids overcome adversity and discover themselves in a healthy way. When I wasn’t working I was traveling around the country rock climbing. Later on, I became a real estate agent and that has been my profession for the last 9 years. I love my career as it affords me a flexible schedule which will come in handy when we are parents.
ABOUT CHRISTIAN... by Melissa
One of the things I admire most about Christian is that he is an optimist. He always sees life through a positive light. He is very thoughtful, kind and a romantic at heart. If there is a way to help someone he drops everything to do it. He is very smart, has a passion to learn and share what he’s learned with others. He enjoys experiencing new cultures.
Always making us amazing meals. He is so very caring and attentive to me and I can’t wait to see him interact with our future children. Our nieces just hang off him & call him “Funkle” Christian... as in Fun-Uncle.
When I was very young we moved around quite a bit for my dad’s job, but when I was eleven we moved to a beautiful rural area in the northwest part of Montana. There we were surrounded by wildlife, rivers, lakes, mountains and trees as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins from both sides of my family.
My parents shared a love of music with myself and my little brother (Jonathan) throughout our childhood. I grew up singing bluegrass music and we would often sing at the local senior citizens center which I think taught us how much joy music could bring people.
I’ve always had a passion for art and had a very inspiring art teacher in high school as well as a Grandma who is an artist. This led me to The Art Institute of Seattle where I studied graphic design. I worked very hard during this time working full-time & going to school full-time. When I graduated I first worked on books, then magazines, eventually I learned how to design & build websites. I am now a Web Design Manager at a great family-friendly workplace in the Boise area.
ABOUT MELISSA... by Christian
My first impression of Melissa, besides her Zebra striped high heels, was her eyes and the softness of her smile. She has a passion for giving to others always willing to give of her time and talents. She has an amazing work ethic and it shows in how successful she is in her career. She is such a talented artist and it shows in her watercolor paintings. I can imagine her teaching our child how to paint one day. Melissa adores her brother’s children and it shows in how much they love her back. With all her talents, deep love for children, and her adventurous spirit, I know Melissa will be a great mom.
She joined me on some climbing outings. It became apparent to me that Melissa was very special. She is loved by everyone in the community. She is outgoing & willing to get out of her comfort zone and try new things.
