We met in 2007, while both working at the same software company. We tried to keep our new romance a secret, but looking back, our long glances and giggles may have been obvious! After only two months of dating, we decided to go an adventure together to Spain and Morocco. It was hard to hide it from our coworkers after that!
After getting married in 2014, we wanted to have kids, but found that even with fertility treatments, it would not be possible. We now feel that adoption is the great way to move forward and fulfill our dream of becoming parents.
Adoption is already a part of our lives. Mary’s godparents adopted three girls from China and have given us many insights from their journey. Also, our next door neighbors adopted, and it has been very inspiring to see just how much love they have for one another. We can’t wait to welcome a child into our lives and begin this wonderful journey together.
We live in a high-rise building in downtown Chicago. The building has front desk security staff and cameras at the entrances (although it is rarely needed). The neighborhood is safe, walkable, and kid-friendly. Our apartment is a spacious 2-bedroom, 2 bathroom home with a great view of the city.
I can’t imagine my life without Mary. No matter what I do or where I go, everything is better if she is there with me. Mary is the most loving, selfless and kind person that I’ve ever met. She cares deeply about making a difference in the world and her community.
Being with Mary makes me want to try new things. I have traveled to so many places, tried all kinds of different foods, and met lots of interesting people since Mary has been in my life. I couldn’t ask for a better partner!
When it comes to kids, Mary is a natural as the oldest of seven siblings! I have no doubt that Mary will be an amazing mother.
By Mary: Ahmet is the love of my life. He is loving, open-minded and brave. He has a big heart and soft spot for kids and animals. He is so devoted to our dog Ripley and I know he will do the same for a child! Although he is an introvert, he seeks out new experiences and enjoys spending time with friends (and can still breakdance after 40!).
We both share a love of music and dabble on the piano and guitar. We found out after we started dating that we had both gone to a Pixies concert in Chicago in 2006. I like knowing that Ahmet was out there in the crowd, even though our paths wouldn’t cross for another year.
Ahmet loves the Beatles and even took a class on them! In 2011 during a trip to England and Scotland, we got to visit Liverpool, where the Beatles grew up. Ahmet walked on Abbey Road and saw Strawberry Fields.
I know Ahmet will be a great Dad because he is patient and kind. He is excited to bring a child into our home and share with them all that he knows about the world. Between his big heart and his fun-loving attitude, I don't think you could ask for a better Dad!
