The Challenge of a Christmas Tree with a Toddler
Last year, Aria was one and a half during Christmas and there was no reasoning with her to stop pulling the ornaments off the tree. Around Christmas time, people share the crazy videos of cats destroying the tree, but why aren’t there ones of toddlers? It’s just as funny.
So last year as we decorated the tree and Aria undecorated it, Jason was getting frustrated. With being a stay at home mom, I’ve learned to pick my battles. This one wasn’t worth having. I remember telling Jason, we’ll look back at this one day, and we’ll miss it.
Throughout December last year, when Aria would go in for a nap, I would clean up the living room and put the ornaments back on the tree. Then Aria would wake up and pull them all down. We got in a nice rhythm. We obviously would only hang the plastic and wooden ornaments on the bottom so it wasn’t a big deal for her to play with them.
This year though, as Aria began undecorating the tree, I developed a creative fib. I basically told Aria if she takes down the ornaments, Santa won’t know it’s Christmas and she won’t get presents.
It’s amazing how fast the ornaments went back on the tree! Here we are two days later, and the ornaments are still up.
She did ask me if it was ok for her to play with the Mickey Mouse and red M&M ornaments. I told her Santa would be ok with that.
We purposely didn’t put too many ornaments on the bottom of the tree, but after Aria’s good behavior, I might pull out the rest of the ornaments and finish decorating.
Have you decorated your tree this year? We would love to hear about your Christmas traditions.
