Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, everyone!  This year I had Christmas on two continents, with three Christmas trees——first in Germany with my cousins, then another Christmas celebration with my brother and his family in Connecticut and finally at home in Berkeley. That’s not quite the Christmas I had planned. The Germany trip came together last minute, but all in all, the jet-setting holiday turned out to be really nice. In Germany, I got to spend time with my cousins and their kids, Sebastian and Matthias, whom I Read more »

Fun fall weekend

I had a really fun fall weekend this past weekend. Saturday night I went on a sunset cruise on San Francisco Bay with friends. The views were magical and reminded me of how much I love living here and how grateful I am to call this place home. On Sunday, I met up with friends and their kids for a day apple picking. It was a Read more »

Puppy Love

This week Bodhi and I celebrated his birthday. Bodhi got a birthday dog cookie and a new chew toy which he promptly chewed to bits and we took a sunset walk at Point Isabel, one of our favorite local dog parks. It’s actually more accurate to say that this is our anniversary, since I don’t know Bodhi’s real Read more »

Vacation fun!

I am just back from a great vacation with my German cousins and their kids in Greece. For the last five or so years, I’ve been meeting up with my cousins for a vacation. Last year, we went to Turkey and we met up a cool “family” resort in the Peloppones. It was definitely “kid central” at this Read more »

New adoption letter!

I’ve recently updated my adoption letter, to help you learn more about me, my life and my values. I was able to incorporate some fun new photos with Bodhi (my dog), my new nephew Otto and some new children in my life—-my friends’ Luis and Victoria’s son Sebastian who was just born when I put together Read more »

Germany trip

I am just getting back from a three week trip to Germany for work. I was there for two almost-back-to-back conferences near Munich and some visits to labs in between. I must admit that when I planned this trip back in February it seemed like such an efficient plan to hit two conferences in one trip—-months later, while Read more »

Easter

The last few weeks have been a bit of a blur and so I am finally catching up on finishing some old posts. I am big sentimentalist about holidays. I just love celebrating holiday traditions. Even better when there are kids involved. It lets me be a big kid too!  Easter is one of my favorite holidays. There’s the Read more »

Nostalgic strike—-bowling!

When I was kid, many of our birthday parties were bowling parties at Skytop Lanes, the local bowling alley in town. I still love bowling. I’m terrible at it…really terrible…but there is something about bowling that takes me back to being a kid. I even like wearing the bowling shoes. The sights and sounds—the thunder of Read more »

Cultural Connections

I was in Boston for work this past week and while there, met up with my brother to take my nephew Otto to the German consulate in Boston to register him as a German citizen!  My siblings and I were all born in Germany. In fact, we moved to the US not long after my brother was born. My Dad was naturalized when I was Read more »

A Super (un)Super Bowl Weekend!

The Bay Area has been in the midst of Super Bowl madness the last few weeks. Downtown San Francisco streets are shut down for the “Super Bowl City” and the horrendous Bay Area traffic is even worse that it’s normally very bad. Not being a football fan or caring about the game, I had a lovely weekend staying Read more »

First day in the garden!

It’s been raining for most of January, but Saturday and Sunday were lovely sunny days and I took the opportunity to start working on some new planting beds in my garden. I dug out most of one bed with the digging assistance of my little “helper” Bodhi. We’re looking forward to putting in some plants Read more »

First Signs of Spring!

I was amazed to see on our walk this weekend that the magnolias are starting to coming out! The first signs of spring on January 24th! I feel a bit guilty posting this while friends on the east coast are just starting to dig out of a massive blizzard, but still, this is why I love California! Read more »

Friday at last!

It’s been a long rainy January week and I’m glad its Friday. The photo is Bodhi this morning when I tried to wake him for his morning walk before work. He just burrowed deeper into the blankets. Wish I could have done that too, but alas, it was a workday! Lucky dog! Happy weekend everyone! Read more »

Books and friends

I am a part of a book group and we had a great discussion last night. We read Helen MacDonald’s “H is for Hawk.” The book is a memoir about how the author, when confronted with the sudden death of her father, decides, in her grief, to take on the training of a goshawk. Although she’s an expert falconer, Read more »

Rainy Day Sunday

I had a super fun rainy day Sunday with my friend Victoria and her two cutie kids—Eleanor and Sebastian. We went to Habitot Children’s Museum in Berkeley, which I hadn’t been to before but had heard a lot about from other friends. Of course, on a day like today, it seemed like every family in Berkeley had a similar idea Read more »

Motherly determination!

My favorite news story of the last few weeks has been the story of Tolay, the elephant seal Mom-to-be who shut down Highway 37 in Sonoma just north of San Francisco in a two-day standoff. Just a few days before New Year’s, Tolay (as she was named) waddled out of San Pablo Bay from Tolay Creek in Sonoma and started to Read more »

Happy New Year!

I had a lovely new year’s starting with a morning hike in the redwoods at Muir Woods on new year’s eve day and capping with a meditation retreat on new year’s day. Such a perfect way to say goodbye to 2015 and welcome 2016.  I like to make new year’s resolutions and at the retreat we talked about Read more »

Home sweet home

I had a great Christmas visiting my brother and his family, especially my adorable nephew Otto.  I’m now heading home, back to Berkeley, and looking forward to taking the week off for some much needed R&R. Read more »
